Folic acid (folacin, pteroylglutamic acid)

• A component of folic acid is para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA).  PABA is sometimes claimed to be a vitamin; however, folic acid cannot be synthesized by higher animals from PABA.
• Folic acid functions physiologically as a carrier of activated, one-carbon units (methyl and formyl donor).
